Havering Green Belt Homes

A new rural housing community

Satish Jassal Architects has designed a residential development of eight detached homes on a brownfield site within Havering’s Green Belt. The scheme provides a mix of three and five-bedroom family houses, carefully balancing the delivery of new homes with the sensitivities of a rural setting.

The development is organised around a central communal garden, forming the heart of the scheme and encouraging a strong sense of community. The homes are arranged along the perimeter, creating a safe, overlooked space for children to play and for residents to enjoy shared outdoor amenity.

The central landscape is designed to enhance biodiversity, incorporating natural ponds, wildflower planting and native grass species that respond to the local ecology. This approach ensures the development integrates with its surroundings while improving environmental value.

Architecturally, the homes adopt a contemporary interpretation of traditional rural forms, including pitched roofs and dormers. A robust palette of slate, brick and timber reinforces this connection to local vernacular while ensuring durability and longevity.

All homes are designed to meet the London Housing Design Guide and Lifetime Homes standards, providing accessible, adaptable living environments. Where appropriate, first-floor terraces are introduced to maximise views across the wider landscape and enhance residential amenity.

This project demonstrates how brownfield sites within the Green Belt can be sensitively developed to deliver high-quality family housing, combining strong placemaking with landscape-led design.
